The city has a unique blend of old and new cultures, which you'll notice when you visit one of its many museums or historical sites. There are plenty of great places to stay near Shanghai too, so no matter where you're coming from or what your budget is, there's something here for everyone!

Go to the Bund

Shanghai’s Bund is an iconic sight. The Bund is a waterfront area of Shanghai and has been since the 1840s when it was first built. Today, it’s one of the most popular spots in the city to visit for tourists and locals alike.

The Bund is definitely worth visiting as many times as possible during your trip to Shanghai. It can be visited at night or during the day; even better, try visiting early morning or late afternoon!

Take the subway

The subway is the best way to get around Shanghai. It's cheap, easy to use and you can buy a metro card at any station.

You can also buy a metro card at the airport if you arrive in the early morning or late at night when most shops are closed. You just need some cash for your fare, but your card will be preloaded with enough money for 2 journeys (RMB 30).

The metro is very clean and efficient and has bilingual English signs inside each train car – just let the conductor know where you want to go before they close the doors so they can tell other passengers where their stop is!

It’s important to note that if there aren’t enough people getting on/off at your station then it may not be worth stopping there so plan accordingly!

Visit the Summer Palace

 

The Summer Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the summer resort of the Qing Dynasty emperors. It is located in southwest Beijing and covers an area of 700 acres (283 hectares). The palace is famous for its numerous lakes and gardens, as well as historical sites and monuments. Visitors can explore the two royal gardens, Heping Garden (Peace Garden) and Kunming Lake Garden (Garden of Clear Ripples). Both are known for their traditional Chinese architecture, pavilions built on stilts over lakes or rivers, bridges connecting them with each other or to neighbouring buildings, pavilions set on islands above water level etcetera. Located in Lujiazui, a business district in Pudong, the Oriental Pearl Tower sits at 468 meters (1,535 feet) and contains an observation deck on its 89th floor that offers views of all of Shanghai's major neighbourhoods. The tower also features an outdoor 'skywalk' where visitors can walk around on top of it if they are brave enough!
