While you should not totally rely on these programs, you can definitely perfect the shots you actually take. After all, you can only control so much when shooting.
One of the best ways to take better photographs is to master the exposure levels and modes of your camera. Opt for your next photoshoot outside on an overcast day.
When doing a photoshoot, take a lot of pictures. With digital cameras and computers, you can take near infinite pictures. You'll have a better chance of getting good photos when you take more. And if you get bad ones, all you have to do is hit delete to get rid of them.
Don't dawdle when taking your shot. Perfect moments evaporate with the breeze, so you must be ready to act without hesitation. Animals will run, people will blink, and little kids might start making funny faces while you are trying to get the ultimate shot. While camera settings are important, you should never lose a shot trying to get a camera set just so.
Set up a "real" photoshoot. You could get a model off of one of the modelling sites that are scattered all over the internet, or you could just have a friend that is comfortable in front of your camera take a day to work with you. Either way, you are going to get experience behind your camera and have fun doing it.
