To create photographic images that resemble paintings, try having your photos printed onto matte or semi-gloss papers, then painting them by hand with photographic oils or pastels. These items can be picked up at most art supply stores and many camera shops. The most popular paints are made by Marshall's and are created specifically for use on photographs.
Compose your photograph carefully. Sometimes you might have to actually move things around to get the proper contrast or light you want. If you are taking pictures of objects, turn them to get the proper angle. As you progress, you will learn how to make a scene look natural when you compose it.
Be creative when composing your shots. Photography is all about the visual effect of your shots. If it's a mundane item in a cluttered background, chances are good that no one will care to look at your photo. Learn how to create a good photo, and then take those skills and apply them to your own creative ideas.
You can do a lot to change the quality of your pictures by adjusting the focus of the shot. What is your primary subject? This doesn't always have to be in the centre of the photo. Having your subject in the lower right hand or left-hand corner, for example, can increase dramatic aspects of your picture.
The key to taking good photographs is always to remember that lighting is the most important thing. Think about lighting all the time. It does not matter what the source of the lighting is, but it is the elemental part of any photograph. Use the sun, a streetlight, a spotlight or even the computer screen to capture any light and make a great photograph.

Make sure you are taking lighting into account when you're taking your photos. Will there be shadows cast upon your subject? Is your subject squinting into the sun or other bright light? Try moving around to find the best angle in the lighting to get the best photo. Try taking your photos at different vantage points so that you can see what works best.
If you are taking pictures in the sun during the spring or summer, make sure to turn the flash on. Failing to put the flash on your camera can result in a bad glare, which can taint your photos. Once you turn the flash on, you can take pictures as you usually would.
In this day and age, you need to know digital photography basics to improve your photos digitally. This means learning the basics of programs like Photoshop. While you should not totally rely on these programs, you can definitely perfect the shots you actually take. After all, you can only control so much when shooting.
One of the best ways to take better photographs is to master the exposure levels and modes of your camera. Modern cameras have a wide range of preset exposures and scene modes that are specificity designed to take photos in different situations. Learn how to use those first and then work your way into learning how to manage manual exposures.
To get unique photos, take pictures of the subject in their natural setting, not a posed one. Do this with children, babies and animals and be sure to snap quickly. These natural shots will help you to catch unexpected emotions and facial expressions.
Get some inspiration from looking at other photographer's photos. You are sure to learn a good bit about how to capture the kinds of photos that you wish for. This does not give you the go-ahead to copy their work, but you sure can learn a lot from it.
Photo Shoot
If you know that you have a really important shoot the next day, make sure that you get ample rest. Yes, a lack of sleep will directly result in loss of judgment, which will hurt the quality of the shots that you take. Get at least eight hours of rest the night before a photoshoot.
Natural light will always provide you with the highest quality photos. Cloudy days are actually better for shooting than sunny ones, because the clouds act as a natural diffuser, spreading the light out and eliminating shadows and harsh contrasts. Opt for your next photoshoot outside on an overcast day.
When doing a photoshoot, take a lot of pictures. With digital cameras and computers, you can take near infinite pictures. You'll have a better chance of getting good photos when you take more. And if you get bad ones, all you have to do is hit delete to get rid of them.
Don't dawdle when taking your shot. Perfect moments evaporate with the breeze, so you must be ready to act without hesitation. Animals will run, people will blink, and little kids might start making funny faces while you are trying to get the ultimate shot. While camera settings are important, you should never lose a shot trying to get a camera set just so.
Set up a "real" photoshoot. You could get a model off of one of the modelling sites that are scattered all over the internet, or you could just have a friend that is comfortable in front of your camera take a day to work with you. Either way, you are going to get experience behind your camera and have fun doing it.
