From north to south, the dreamy, watery expanse recognised for Kuttanad stretches forty-six miles, from Cochi to Alappuzha to Kollam and on land to Kottayam. This area boasts 930 miles of waterways. Meandering channels edged by means of lush vegetation, groves of coconut and banana palms and rice fields connect with wide-open rivers and lagoons. Life strikes slowly in these parts.
This area offers a charming insight into the rural lifestyle of its inhabitants. Colourful thatched or tiled homes cluster together in small communities, complete with worship centres, banks and hospitals that count on water ambulances.
Tourists can reach this area by boat - organised tours and ferries. Buses travel near the city. We plan to spend a lot of time no matter which path we choose. Transportation in this place is equivalent to slow lives.
If you have extra money, you would possibly consider spending a night or two at the Coconut Lagoon, a complex resort built in the grandest of regular Keralan architecture. Nearby is an old colonial house recognised as the Taj Garden Retreat. Both of these places offer sundown cruises in converted cargo boats and overnight excursions on houseboats. Not a wrong way to explore this beautiful area.
January, July, August and September are the months given by the Alappuzha snake boat races. On these occasions, there are boats introduced by hundreds of guys, each competing at peak performance on the region’s waterways. The most famous of these is the Nehru Trophy Race, which takes place every year on the second Sunday in August. Forty enormously decorated boats compete in this race and are often accompanied through naval helicopters showing their prowess. Crowds are significant for this every year event, and anyone who is in the region solely for the races would never guess how laid-again life is typically in the backwater area.
