While dominated by Hindu dancers in India, it has a very Muslim population and contributes to the rich diversity of Indian music. While Hindu music revolves primarily around dance, Muslim music is based on instrumental pieces, and sound and dance are secondary.
String instruments include the sitar, which was discovered in the thirteenth century, a smaller version of it, called sarod, and sarangi. Sarangi is considered one of the hardest points in the world as its forty-plus strings are held by the nails. Santoor, a zither of Persian origin, is also used.
Shahnai is the main wind instrument. This is similar to an oboe. Bamboo flutes are also often played. Percussion sounds dominate the tabla, the invention of which is attributed to the creator of the donkey.
The court of the Turks and the Mughals established the tradition of the ragas, the melodic structures between the five and twelve notes in which the musicians improvise. These are determined and played depending on the time of day and the season, and their suitability for a masculine or feminine audience.
Each horn consists of several movements. Traditionally, each would have lasted for hours, but modern warnings have shortened them. The last movement, which is divided into three parts, brings together the percussion instruments of the sound and rhythm pattern.
Although instrumental works have traditionally been male and women have contributed as singers, women are now embarking on the instrumental part of performances.
South Indian Carnatic music originated in Thanjavur, and although it follows the structure of the horn, it uses a more vivid and modified version of traditional instruments.
The very big music festivals are held in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Mumbai, Madra. The Gwalior Tansen Festival is highlighted every December. The visit to India will not end without listening to the performance of the traditional musical form.
